UPHSD Calamba Historical Background

The University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) Calamba Campus is one unit among several Perpetualite academic institutions of

learning established as a result of the pioneering vision of its founders Dr./Col. Antonio Laperal Tamayo and his wife, Dr. Daisy Moran Tamayo.

Guided by t
heir creed, “Character Building is Nation Building”, they advocate that the young can only be assured of a better future by developing the right kind of character today: respectful, hardworking and committed to the formation of a prosperous and wealthy nation based on Christian character.

Today, this creed finds more meaning as the founders’ two sons, Anthony Jose and Richard Antonio, both outstanding graduates of the University of the Philippines, complement the management of both the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) and the UPH Medical Center in Las Piñas.

With their continuing desire to contribute in nation- building through education, the people of the historic Calamba, Laguna caught the concern of the Tamayo family that they scouted for a suitable track of land for a school. After some difficulties, they were able to find an undeveloped grassy land located at Barangay Paciano Rizal, Calamba (now a city) in Laguna.

On June 10, 1996, the pioneering team led by Dr./Col. Antonio Laperal Tamayo together with Dr. Grace De Leon, and others held the ground breaking which laid the foundation and finally its inauguration, thus established what is to become from a small school of only 360 initial enrollees into the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta.

Since 1996 to the present, the university continues to provide quality education to its almost 2,500 students studying in about 30 different Programs offered including the Basic Education and being taught by more than one hundred (100) highly qualified faculty members which compose the entire Perpetualite university system.

It will be noted that the fast pace of the institution’s development, is certainly due to the founders’ foresight of the educational needs of the people in letting its officials, the faculty and the students with their parents getting involved in making the university a partner of the community as well as the government in nation-building.

During its beginnings, the daunting task of managing a new school was given to an abled and committed educator, Dr. Grace de Leon, who, as over-all chair acted as the first school director with her pioneering task force namely: Mrs. Lourdes Mutya, Mr. Meneleo Puno, Mrs. Rachilda Tolosa, Mrs. Evelyn Aguilar, Mr. Sergio Meneses and Mr. Marionello Moraleja– all working on admissions, enrollment, faculty hiring and drafting class programs.

They have undergone the hardships and sacrifices of working even under a make-shift admissions office, rain or shine, in order to accomplish the objectives and purposes of a university as envisioned by its founders.

A year later after the said ground breaking, the façade of the UPHSD Campus was realized. In the above photo: First School Director Dr. Grace de Leon, with her task force.

The initial Programs offered were: in the Tertiary: Arts and Sciences, BS Commerce, BS HRM, BS Computer Science. These Programs were opened to accept first year enrolees which only had 330 students at the start. Together with the Tertiary programs were the Pre-School Department and the First and Second Year High School level. The initial enrolment had only 30 students. Adding the 330 from the tertiary level to the 30 students in the elementary and high school levels, a total of 360 students were accommodated during the 1996 start of operation of UPHSD in Calamba City.

levels of the elementary, high school and college (Arts & Sciences, BS Commerce, BS HRM & BS Computer Science) with Senator Joey Lina of Laguna as the 1st Commencement speaker. Sen. Lina, in his speech, emphasized the value of education in support of the founding father’s creed of “character building is nation building”.

In October 1997, Dr. Antonio Laperal Tamayo celebrated his birthday at UPHSDA, Calamba Campus, a first in its history with the faculty and their students. It was his way of giving recognition to the importance the role of the faculty and their students have in the institution’s life as it develops to contribute to character building and nation building.

Encouraged by CHED Region IV to open in June of that year, the pioneering team had the ground breaking attended by Dr. Jose G. Tamayo, Dr./Col. and Dr. Antonio and Daisy Tamayo, and top government officials. The team rushed the construction of the building late in Mid-April. Due to early rains that visited Calamba in summer, which they failed to reckon, thus they were not able to finish the buildings and were constrained to rent a nearby apartment complex to use as temporary classrooms when it opened the following month of June in 1996. They moved to the partially completed building on the 2nd Semester of the same year. Temporary permits from the CHED/DECS were obtained for all courses in time for the opening of classes.

Dr. Grace de Leon became the First Chancellor and Executive Director. In 1997 when Dr. de Leon was appointed as the First Chancellor and Executive Director of the Systems Executive Academic Committee (SEAC) of the Perpetualite System, several educational leaders succeeded her and continued the programs of the institution. She turned over the management of the school to Mr. Samuel Yap. The turnover was preceded by recruitment of top administrators for the school. Dr. Rey B. Dalde was appointed School Director and Mrs. Fe Atienza as School Registrar.

Other administrative officials were hired in consortium with the mother school, Las Pinas Campus. These were: Dr. Helen Aragones as the Elementary School Principal, and Dr. Loureli Siy as the High School Principal.

Members of the Administration and Engineering Department for the Tertiary Programs, the deans in consortium with the mother school Las Piñas Campus were: Ms. Narlynn Pineda as Dean of HRM, Mr. Jonathan Edward Dy as Dean of Computer Studies and Dr. Eduardo Ong as Dean of Commerce.

A decade has passed since then. Many momentous events have transpired and have been added to the voluminous annals of our nation. The same is true with the UPHSD Calamba. Its campus in now several hectares of aesthetic and functional landscape dotted here and there with a variety of trees whose shades bring comfort to the weary souls. From a single crammed edifice, it has a cluster of school buildings few storeys high housing dozens of classrooms that are equipped with the state-of-the-art gadgets and facilities.

From a few hundreds of enrolees, its student population numbers now to a few thousands and is still counting. From a couple of courses, it now offers many courses in as many fields: Business Management and Accountancy; Computer Science and Information Technology; Arts and Sciences (Psychology and Mass Communication); Education; International Hospitality Management; Tourism; Criminology; Engineering and Allied Health like Nursing, Medical Technology and Pharmacy and the newest, its short courses. Of course, there is also the Grade School, which has individualized instruction program and the Business High School which is from first year to fourth year levels.

The UPHSD- Calamba has grown to what it is today not only because of its clear vision that is being committedly and faithfully pursued by its founder and the board of trustees but also because of the goodwill that it has created through the years within its immediate vicinity and throughout and even beyond the region. Manned by educators and mentors who in their own rights are cloaked with genuine and flaming civic-mindedness, the university has involved itself in countless community projects that have, to date, benefited thousands of victims of natural and man-made catastrophes, It has espoused and fostered many causes and advocacies aimed at alleviation of upliftment of the present socio-economic and socio-political condition of so-called great unwashed. It has been an active partner of the church, the non-government organizations and the local governments in addressing people’s concerns.

From its humble beginnings up to what it is today- University of Perpetual Help System –Calamba Campus is now considered one of the sturdy and reliable pillars in the field of education and health sciences in the Southern Tagalog region or CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon provinces) areas.
